2. Old Ayyubid Mosque in Ajloun Town: A Step Back in Time

The Old Ayyubid Mosque in Ajloun is an important religious and cultural landmark. The Mosque of Ajloun is one of the oldest mosques in Jordan and is the only one that has been continuously used since it was built by King Al Saleh Najm al-Din Ayyub in 1247 AD. The mosque is in the center of Ajloun town, overlooking the main marketplace. 3. The Teleferik: A Ride with a View

For a unique experience, the Teleferik (cable car) in Ajloun offers a bird’s-eye view of the town and its lush surroundings. The cable car takes visitors from the base of Ajloun's green hills up to scenic points with impressive views over forests, valleys, and Ajloun Reserve. The ride is especially popular in spring when the hills are blanketed in wildflowers and the landscape appears almost surreal. It’s a fantastic way to see Ajloun’s natural beauty from a fresh perspective. The starting point is located 3 minutes’ walk from Ajloun Castle.

The entrance fee is for a round-trip ticket. The length of the trip is 5 km round-trip (2.5 km each way) and lasts 10 minutes each way (20 minutes round-trip).

4. Ajloun Nature Reserve: Eco-tourism and Conservation

Ajloun Nature Reserve is a beautifully preserved area of natural forests managed by the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN). The reserve features several hiking trails, from easy walks to challenging treks, offering a chance to experience the area’s forests, fields, and wildlife habitats. Guided walks and educational programs on conservation efforts add a meaningful layer to a visit there. For thrill seekers, the nature reserve can also be experienced from a different perspective. A fun way of adventure is the giant swing and the zip line.
The place is beautiful as it is one of the few places in Jordan to experience forest. If you come with your family, you may want carefully chose your activities, as the prices are adding up quickly for all the different options of adventures.

6. Jordan Trail in Ajloun: A Journey Through Nature and Heritage

Jordan Trail northern section from Umm Qais to Ajloun :
One of the best ways to experience the beauty of Ajloun is by trekking the Jordan Trail, a remarkable 675-kilometer route that spans the country from Umm Qais in the north to Aqaba in the south. Ajloun is a highlight on the trail’s northern section, offering hikers a stunning mix of natural beauty, cultural immersion, and historical significance.
The trail through Ajloun winds through lush forests, picturesque olive groves, and peaceful hills, taking you through the rich biodiversity of northern Jordan. Hikers will encounter small villages along the way, where locals often greet visitors warmly, providing insight into traditional Jordanian life. Passing ancient sites like Ajloun Castle, the trail also offers a historical dimension, making it more than just a physical journey—it's a path that connects travelers to Jordan’s storied past and vibrant present.
Jordan Trail Ajloun to Khirbet Al-Souq (South) - our preference
This stage of the Jordan trail is 16.2 km, takes about 5-6 hours one way to complete and will take you down south from the castle along a sparsely pine forested hill to Wadi Al-Tawaheen. The first stretch from the castle is not marked. It is recommended to use a trail map or a trail app ( for example WIKILOC). Once you passed over the wadi, a small track head back up, passing olive groves and avoiding the towns of Anjara and Kufrinja before winding around the W end of the hills above. A countryside path will then continue past the old, abandoned village of Sarabees with its spring, then on over more rolling hills still on quiet countryside treks and down into pretty Wadi Mahmoud with its eponymous cliff (good sports climbs). A nice path follows the cliff top to the next valley and Khirbet al-Souq. You can expect to have phone/internet signal along the entire trail length.

Jordan Trail Ajloun to Rasun (North)
This section of the Jordan Trail from Ajloun to Rasun is 16,9 km and can be walked in about 4 - 5 hours one way. The trek is marked and relatively easy and suitable for moderate fitness level. From Ajloun Castle you will walk towards the ruins of the ancient church of Mar Eliyas and then the trail meanders further over increasingly high semi-forested hills. You will be then walking on countryside paths through the rural villages of Al Ayoun, via Baoun, Orjan and onwards towards Rasun If you would like to stray off the trail to visit the RSCN’s Soap House and Calligraphy House, then these are nearby Orjan and make an interesting stop along the northern route to Rasun.

Best Time to Hike: Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are ideal seasons, as the weather is mild, and the landscapes are vibrant with blooming wildflowers in spring
Essentials: Bring water, snacks, and navigation tools. If you’d prefer guidance, several local organizations offer organized hikes and tours.
Overnight Options: For multi-day trekkers, consider staying at Eco-lodges in Ajloun Nature Reserve or guesthouses in nearby villages to experience more of the region’s charm.
How to get there/transport:
Ajloun – buses from Amman (north bus station) to Ajloun, then from Ajloun take a bus or Taxi to Ajloun castle. There is no fixed schedule for buses; they leave when they are full.
Anjara – local bus passes between Ajloun and Anjara.
Khirbet al Souq – bus service from Anjara to Rajeb, which reaches As-Sakhne 3km away from Khirbet al-Souq, from Khirbet al-Souq, it is 15km to Jerash. Leave on the road to Rakeb, get a car from the main road and find a service taxi (1 JD to Sakhne, 10JD to Jerash)
General public transport between villages: no set schedules, buses leave when full, many routes only have private car service available.
Baoun to Ajloun: 5-7JD, private car services
Rasoun to Ajloun: 7-10JD, private car services
